![]() So if movies reveal a social dream, what can we say about social dreams in which aliens play a dominant role? What kinds of conflicts can potentially be resolved by a movie about aliens both benign (as in the 1982 “ET” film) or malevolent (as in the “Alien” series) The answer is…it depends. Alternatively, they may just help to hypnotize us and keep us in the dark. But movies can also provoke nightmares, too, and those nightmares don’t necessarily end upon waking. Movies have been equated with dreams, since they employ the language of dreams to powerful effect. They also have the capacity-and the power-to exacerbate social distress. But it works the other way around as well just as movies can reflect social distress (thanks to this often unconscious collaboration between filmmakers, writers, actors and audiences). That is why the cinematic portrayals of aliens can tell us so much about what’s going on in human minds. The individual collaborators may not be aware they are doing this (often they are not) and the results may surprise all the participants. Given this dynamic, films have a unique ability to capture the zeitgeist (the cultural ethos and values of a society) and represent a social dream. This dynamic isn’t limited to any particular place or time if the film is successful and has something to say then the audiences of generations to come will be invited to become collaborators, too. However, without the viewer’s imagination, the film would be dead on arrival. ![]() A very interesting dynamic arises from this collaboration what the screenwriter imagines when he is putting words down on paper is not the same as what the director imagines while she’s shooting the film or what the actors imagine while they’re performing. Unlike books, films are a collective medium that calls on creative collaboration involving the director, the screenwriters the actors and ultimately the audience. By bringing these conflicts to light, moviemakers, whether they are conscious of it or not, are trying to explain the sources of tension and showing us a possible way out of our dilemma. And there is probably no better vehicle for expressing our social dreams and for revealing the conflicts that society is grappling with, than the movies. What holds for individual dreams is true of the social dream. A good case can be made that dreams are an attempt to work out conflict. And although the meaning and purpose of dreams are a perpetual subject of dispute and speculation, there is no doubt that dreams are frequently characterized by tension. That experience-societal and individual-is the raw material of the dream. The social dream emerges from aggregate social experience just as our own dreams are based to one degree or another on our life experience. This collective dreamlike experience, which arises as result of an evolving dynamic between the individuals and their culture, is constantly being transformed, sometimes incrementally, sometimes in quantum leaps. Societies dream just like individuals do. The distinction between what is out there-sometimes, as in the case of extraterrestrials, way out there-and what is within us begins to disappear.Īliens are a kind of social dream. Or they can usurp humans like parasites, turning them into zombies. Aliens can assume familiar forms they can look like members of our own family or our friends. We shun them, we deny that they exist, but we can’t get away from them-and no wonder: we don’t necessarily recognize them when they’re standing right in front of us. Yet aliens are not always treated as malevolent beings that have come to usurp our societies, seize control of the planet, and pilfer our resources: the human/alien crews in Star Trek represent a social dream that society perceives as desirable.Īliens fill us with dread and yet they exert an inescapable attraction on us. ![]() During the Cold War era some of the prevailing social dreams were haunted by the specter of nuclear annihilation, and the idea of alien threat continues to make up the majority of film science fiction productions. There are as many types of aliens as there are social dreams. Aliens appear in human folklore because they are equipped by us with traits and characteristics we secretly desire such immortality. Movies are similar to dreams and nightmares in that they employ the language of dreams to powerful effect. And it works the other way around as well: just as movies can reflect social distress, they also have the capacity to add to, or exacerbate social distress. Cinematic portrayals of aliens can tell us much about what is going on in human minds. The notion and images of aliens are for the most part an outcome of collective societal occurrences that often consists of personalized accounts of encounters with other beings, and in many ways are like our own dreams which are based on our life experiences. ![]()

![]() ![]() The only human lunar missions to date have been those of the United States' Apollo program, which landed twelve men on the surface between 19. The first artificial object to reach the Moon was the Soviet Union's uncrewed Luna 2 spacecraft in 1959 this was followed by the first successful soft landing by Luna 9 in 1966. Such influences can be found in language, calendar systems, art, and mythology. The Moon's apparent size is nearly the same as that of the Sun, allowing it to cover the Sun almost completely during a total solar eclipse.īoth the Moon's prominence in Earth's sky and its regular cycle of phases have provided cultural references and influences for human societies throughout history. However, due to its large angular diameter, the full moon is the brightest celestial object in the night sky. The lunar surface is fairly non-reflective, with the reflectance of lunar soil being comparable to that of asphalt. Most of the large impact basins and mare surfaces were in place by the end of the Imbrian period, some three billion years ago. ![]() The near side of the Moon is marked by dark volcanic maria ("seas"), which fill the spaces between bright ancient crustal highlands and prominent impact craters. It then receded to a wider orbit because of tidal interaction with the Earth. The most widely accepted origin explanation posits that the Moon formed 4.51 billion years ago, not long after Earth, out of the debris from a giant impact between the planet and a hypothesized Mars-sized body called Theia. However, 59% of the total lunar surface can be seen from Earth through cyclical shifts in perspective known as libration. The Moon is tidally locked to Earth, which means that the length of a full rotation of the Moon on its own axis causes its same side ( the near side) to always face Earth, and the somewhat longer lunar day is the same as the synodic period. During each synodic period of 29.5 days, the amount of visible surface illuminated by the Sun varies from none up to 100%, resulting in lunar phases that form the basis for the months of a lunar calendar. The Moon's orbit around Earth has a sidereal period of 27.3 days. Its gravitational influence is the main driver of Earth's tides and very slowly lengthens Earth's day. The Moon orbits Earth at an average distance of 384,400 km (238,900 mi), or about 30 times Earth's diameter. Its surface gravity is about one-sixth of Earth's at 0.1654 g, with Jupiter's moon Io being the only satellite in the Solar System known to have a higher surface gravity and density. It lacks any significant atmosphere, hydrosphere, or magnetic field. The Moon is a planetary-mass object with a differentiated rocky body, making it a satellite planet under the geophysical definitions of the term and larger than all known dwarf planets of the Solar System. It is the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System and the largest and most massive relative to its parent planet, with a diameter about one-quarter that of Earth (comparable to the width of Australia). The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite. ![]() ![]() ![]() Guitar Pro requires Guitar Pro or the free Tux Guitar software. MIDI requires any media player like VLC player. Early jug bands variously featured jugs, guitars, mandolins, banjos, kazoos, stringed basses, harmonicas, fiddles, washboards and other everyday appliances converted into crude instruments. ![]() Jug band music was popular in the South until the 1930s. Blues bands may have evolved from early jazz bands, gospel choirs and jug bands. Occasionally they teamed up with one or more fellow bluesmen to perform in the plantation camps, rural juke joints, and rambling shacks of the Deep South. Well-known blues pioneers from the 1920s such as Son House, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Leadbelly, Charlie Patton and Robert Johnson usually performed solo with just a guitar. The individual parts of this scale are known as the blue notes. A specific series of notes is also utilized in the blues. Without getting too technical, most blues music is comprised of 12 bars (or measures). Many of the earliest blues musicians incorporated the blues into a wider repertoire that included traditional folk songs, vaudeville music, and minstrel tunes. This music is not very far removed from the field hollers and work songs of the slaves and sharecroppers. But the legacy of these earliest blues pioneers can still be heard in 1920s and '30s recordings from Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Georgia and other Southern states. Unfortunately, much of this original music followed these sharecroppers to their graves. Handy insisted that the blues were revealed to him in 1903 by an itinerant street guitarist at a train station in Tutwiler, Mississippi.ĭuring the middle to late 1800s, the Deep South was home to hundreds of seminal bluesmen who helped to shape the music. For instance, minstrel show bandleader W.C. No single person invented the blues, but many people claimed to have discovered the genre. A decade or so later the blues gave birth to rhythm 'n blues and rock 'n roll. Once the Delta blues made their way up the Mississippi to urban areas, the music evolved into electrified Chicago blues, other regional blues styles, and various jazz-blues hybrids. Unlike jazz, the blues didn't spread out significantly from the South to the Midwest until the 1930s and '40s. Blues and jazz have always influenced each other, and they still interact in countless ways today. The blues grew up in the Mississippi Delta just upriver from New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz. It's generally accepted that the music evolved from African spirituals, African chants, work songs, field hollers, rural fife and drum music, revivalist hymns, and country dance music. Its inventors were slaves, ex-slaves and the descendants of slaves-African-American sharecroppers who sang as they toiled in the cotton and vegetable fields. The blues originated on Southern plantations in the 19th Century. The blues has deep roots in American history, particularly African-American history.
